Stages of Incubation

Entrepreneurs are guided through a series of incubation stages and may enter the incubation program at whatever stage of business evolution they are in when they apply.

Pre-Incubation – 3 to 6 Months:

Any person with an idea is invited to be part of the pre-incubation stage as long as they meet one major criteria: the idea solves a problem in the community. If accepted, DTBi works with the pre – incubatee to make the idea bankable and to graduate the startup phase. The pre- incubation program is done in the   BUNI innovation space at Costech and in collaboration with other Innovation Hubs.

DTBi provides these services in the pre-incubation stage:

  • Idea screening and refinement
  • Guided mentoring and coaching to make the idea bankable.
  • Technical assistance on concept development of prototype.
  • Progressive evaluation for graduation to next stage
  • Access to high speed internet.
  • Networking events and workshops.
  • Assistance in market analysis
  • Technical assistance on concept development prototype.
  • Progression evaluation for transition to next stage
  • Access to high speed internet.
  • Networking events and workshops.
  • Business Capacity Building.

Startup – 6 to 12 Months:

This stage of incubation is for entrepreneurs having graduated the pre-incubation stage or for Innovators with prototypes that are for testing and commercialization. They can be residential or non-residential. During this stage, the prototype is completed and tested. Innovators are assisted to identify pilot testing sites, development of revenue model and given a range of business development support services to support business formalization and monetarization. Startups to graduate to next stage must have at least one client/customer.

DTBi provides these services to innovators in the Start-Up Phase:

  • Capacity Building and Support for business planning, company management like, Board setup, HR, Accounts, taxation, etc
  • Establishment of the company
  • Support towards concept pilot testing
  • Mentoring and Coaching
  • Development of revenue model and financial projections
  • Linkage to potential markets
  • Exposure to DTBi expert talks, training and marketing events
  • Progressive evaluation for graduation to next stage
  • Access to seed capital (finance/grants) where possible.
  • Space in secure building
  • Access to high speed internet.
  • Networking events.
  • Exhibitions, workshops and hackerthons.

Company Incubatees – up to 4 years:

This stage of incubation is for companies with a minimum annual turnover of 15,000,000 Tsh ($9,375 USD) or higher. These companies can either be resident in the incubation facility or non-residents who maintain offices elsewhere. The companies are supported to link to potential markets, access to financing, business advice, space and internet for resident companies among others.

DTBi provides all the startup services, plus the following:

  • Space to run the businesses
  • Strategic Market Linkages support
  • Linkages to financing
  • Mentoring and Coaching
  • Business development Support (legal, financial, advisory, etc.)
  • Evaluation for exit
  • Access to high speed internet.
  • Networking events.
  • Training, Exhibitions and workshops.

Graduated Companies/Alumni

This stage of incubation is for companies that have graduated and form the DTBi Alumni. They partner with DTBi in performing projects on a cost/revenue share basis. They are supported by the services offered to others on a case by case basis.
